Midi Looper

Does anybody know if there is a looper available that is midi controllable.
E.g. if a midi signal is sent from a Notation program, the looper should
start recording the loop and when the notation program sends a midi
command to stop recording the loop that should be possible too.
Also to play pause and stop the loop at midi commands from the notation
software.

Anyone know of such a midi enabled looper ?

thanks

On Linux and Mac theres sooperlooper
(http://http://essej.net/sooperlooper/)

I've only played with it a little bit, but it seems you can control any of
its functions via MIDI or OSC.

I use Linux as far as possible. thanks a lot, this is helpful.

Also anyone knows of a great hardware looper that can loop external
instruments.

I know they exist since days gone by, but I battle to find any recently
made ones.

Boss rc300 and rc505 are their two top of the line loopers-one is a floor looper one is a tabletop looper. I've not used the 505 but I've played with the 300 and its fantastic.

Stereo out, multiple tracks, works as an audio interface over USB, sd cards so you can create different sets and swap them out, pretty long record time available, built in high quality effects and plenty of useful extra functions that were missing from other loopers I tried.

But ultimately it does what you ask-it has midi in/out/thru with a pretty decent selection of controls you can use-not just clock sync/start/stop. I think if there is a function you can assign to a pedal, you can control it over midi too although I'm not sure that's 100% true. Still I've not yet found a function I wanted to control but couldn't.

Only issue is cost, it's one of the most expensive loopers on the market. Still, if you are keen on getting into loopers but want one that integrates well with other devices over midi I can't really think of another option

Do you know if the Boss can Sync with Midi able Notation software as
Matthias pointed out ?

The 505 looks nice, but it seems to be geared towards beatboxers. The
300 is much more along the line of what I would use.

Yes it definitely can. It can either be midi master, generating the midi clock that other devices (in your case the midi interface of your computer) sync to, or it can be midi slave, where it follows along to the clock generated by another device. If you download the manual it even discusses linking 2 of their pedals together over midi.

If I were you I would try and go down to your local guitar tech store, as its boss' flagship looping pedal many stores have them so you can hopefully have a play around. There are YouTube videos also

Ambiloop is completely free and it works perfect with my Windoze XP
and Behringer FCB1010 footcontroler via midi. I didn't try it with any
DAW yet, but it should be easy to configure the midi commands to get
it work the way you want it.

you may want continuous resync with MIDIclock
because otherwise the notation program and the loop will drift apart over time
few loopers can do this! EchoplexDP, Looperlative, maybe some other.
on the computer this is easier since looper plugins can stay with the host timing without MIDIclock

you may find information on http://livelooping.org
- or suggest to add information :-)

Matthias, thanks for the Software looping info. It is really very helpful.

I have to go look if my notation software has looping plugins.
Then, I will have to file a looping plugin that will eg. read from an
input on a Presonus Firebox, and then Playback through one of the
outputs on the firebox.

I havent seen this, but then I am new to this particular part of Midi
application. Livelooping (In general) I never did before. I always left
that to the keyboard player since the 80's!

If Sync is going to be a big issue using a hardware looper like the Boss
300, then I guess your suggestion is the only viable option.
I will have to look into what Boss can do in this respect.

Thanks all for responding. All information was helpful.
It is a difficult decision to decide whether I will need a software or
hardware solution, but I have a pretty good idea what the status quo is
after your responses and will start digging into all the suggestions made.

Thanks a lot.
