Discussion:
Blue Chip AX-100 SB Ver 2.02

Have a unit that in the Upgrade PDF provided at the Axon technology website, it's the unit A.
It only has a level mono knob. So it can't be upgraded with a MKII kit.
Is firmware version 2.02 the last version for this unit? I have a B type that has version 2.08. Been looking around for the answer but thought someone here may have the version history list handy.
Thanks in advance,

Mark

Thanks for the quick reply.

The owner pulled a yamaha daughterboard from a NGC-77 DB50XC and put it in the AX-100 that has a 2.02 chip. There were complaints about low output volume from the card. Would it be because it needs 2.03 or because the sound card should be the smaller square DB51XG?

The unit is being shipped to me. Once I've burned a new eprom with 2.03, I'll try the test senarios you submitted and advise.

Thanks for all the help,

Gregor,

Pulled a 2.02 prom and installed a 2.08 prom in the AX-100 that has the level knob only. Does this unit stop at rev 2.03? It has R16 pulled and a DX-50 sound card installed.

I started doing the test you requested and noticed you were trying to resolve a 2.03 issue.

The unit seems to be working fine with 2.08 installed. Tracks great, fret/string split works. Midi out to DAW is awesome.

Thought I ask before sending it back.

Disregard last post.

Burning a 2.03 chip since it has a DX-50 card in it.

Though 2.08 seems to work...

Mark, do you know what the latest is for an Axon AX100 blue chip ?
Mine boots up saying it is Version 2.08.

If a newer version exists, would it be worthwhile to get it ?

and
If a newer version exists, can you give me a quote for a new eprom with
Version >2.08 already burnt?

You can send it offline.

Thanks.

I beleive 2.08 is it. If 2.08 is working, I'd stick with that. If it's not broken...

There are other folks who may be able to answer your question. In reading Gregor's replys and links, 2.08 was the last version for the ax-100 with a DX-50 sound card. I have a AX-100 SB with a DX-51 card and it has a 2.08 prom in it. So not really sure.

In reading Gregor's replys and links, 2.08 was the last version for the ax-100 with a DX-50 sound card. I have a AX-100 SB with a DX-51 card and it has a 2.08 prom in it. So not really sure.
>
> Mark
>
>
>
> --- In ***@yahoogroups.com, Lv <***@...> wrote:
>>
>> Mark, do you know what the la

Good Info thanks.

1) What exactly do I miss using V2.08 vs V2.03.
I am primarily interested in creating accurate notation from playing.
2) You mention the AX100 has an Eprom. Usually that means physical
UV-erasing.
or
do you mean it has an EEPROM ?

I cannot believe that a 2000's piece of electronics will still use EPROM.
I did not notice the Eprom window when I fixed the defect electrolytics
in mine long ago.
( I guess I am to lazy to pull it out of the rack and open it up right
now. It works just fine )
Post by g***@web.de
AX-100 v2.03 : DB-50XG, GM (General MIDI) mode, XG mode, TG300 mode, 32
programmable QS300 sounds. (480 sounds + 11 drum sets).
AX-100 v2.08 : DB-51XG, GM (General MIDI) mode, XG mode. (TG300/QS300
mode dropped by Yamaha.) Editing of fingerpicking-programming slightly
improved.
AX-100 v2.09 : SB 100, BlueChip's own soundboard, GM only, XG mode no
longer supported (128 sounds only + 11 drum sets)
Versions between 2.03 & 2.08 were developement-inbetween-versions only
which were never actually released. AFAIK not working properly.
Source of these informations: Christoph Schmutzler at BlueChip/Wersi in
January 2005.
You can see, the soundboard section got more and more reduced after v2.03.
v2.08 doesn't support the DB-50XG anymore, only the reduced soundset of
the DB-51XG.
The 32 programmable QS300 sounds, which made the DB-50XG the gem it was,
were actually the reason why I had my unit downgraded from v2.08 to v
2.03 when I bought it back then (used) from Cristoph Schmutzler.
If you were interested in this modification you'd have to find a DB-50XG
(on ebay occasionally) and get v2.03 burnt into your EPROM.
(v2.03 is here in the files section in the "Axon - Blue Chip" folder.)

And because of this EPROM the internal backup battery is needed.
Hate to be picky, but you're confusing NVRAM (non-volatile random access memory) with EPROM (electrically programmable read only memory). An EPROM will preserve it's memory without electrical supply indefinitely (until erased with UV light) but must be completely erased before any data can be written to it. The battery in the Axon's and most other synths and MIDI devices preserves the patch memory in RAM which is changed frequently by the user. The battery provides a trickle supply to keep the memory powered while the rest of the unit is switched off. The advent of cheap flash memory now makes NVRAM an obsolete technology.

Usually the batteries go after about 5 years, which seems to be the case with the NGC-77 etc, but I have an Alesis Quadraverb new from 1991 that is still chugging along with it's original battery. Boy, did I get good value out of that purchase...
